HOW TO HANDLE CRITICISM

Several years ago I heard a statement from Bishop Francis Wale Oke of Christ Life Church, Ibadan Oyo state of Nigeria. This statement got me thinking because it came at a point I wanted to throw in the towel, and call it quit on my vision in life. He said “if you don’t want people to talk about you, then you have to do nothing, say nothing and be nothing” later I got to know too that even if you apply this nothing principle into your life, people will still talk about your “nothingness” .

One of the reasons why most people don’t achieve anything in life and they allow all the ideas God has been bringing into their lives to die as mere ideas is because they don’t want people to criticise their actions. We cannot help it; we must just be criticised and talked about. This is a normal thing that we cannot avoid. But am going to show you how to manage it and that will eventually be for your good. One of the projects you are to undertake is to change how you feel about criticism.

To reach your goals quickly you need to welcome criticism that comes your way. Like Ken Blanchard said “criticism is the food of the champions” many at times we may not see the other side of what we are doing, people can point your attention to some of those things you have overlooked in form of criticism. When you know the right way to respond to all these, then the closer and faster you are to your goal and you will become more perfect in whatever you are doing.

3 WAYS TO HANDLE CRITICISM

  1. DON’T QUIT YOUR DREAM: There are a lot of people who have quit their dreams because someone criticised them. One thing you have to know here is that criticism is simply information designed to guide and correct you, instead of pulling you down. When you have this mindset then you will begin to use the instrument of criticism as a tool or compass to where you are going in life.
  2. DON’T TAKE THE SOURCE PERSONAL: It is possible for you to know the source of the criticism, don’t ever make the mistake of taking things personal with the source. Like we said in the above point that criticism is just a piece of information given out, toward your goals and actions. It is not 100% targeted towards your personality but towards issues. The danger of taking it personal with the source is that you might not get a sincere remark about yourself and the issues again from that source. Because there are tendencies of reacting with hostility towards someone who is giving out a genuine feed back of yourself. Just know that issues are been addressed not the personality.
  3. DON’T PUSH ASIDE CRITICISM: If truly criticism is a piece of information that can help you to achieve the extra ordinary, don’t brush them aside. You may not see your back like the person at your back. So why not receive the criticism, analyse them and use them as a spring board to jump higher. Explaining, blaming and justifying your actions are all waste of time. Just welcome the comments and use whatever is applicable and valuable for your purpose.

The journey of success is a path that is not just a fun fare, walking on. You are sure likely to meet a lot of obstacles on the way, how you handle them matters because they are there to make you strong.
